Finding Beauty in Unique Places

As an automotive photographer, I have had the amazing opportunity to capture the beauty of cars in some of the most unique places. While some may see these locations as mundane or even unappealing, I have learned to find the hidden beauty in them.

One example of this is exploring parking garages. On the outside a parking garage generally looks the exact same. However, on the inside they offer a wide range of lighting moods, unique architectural structures, and breathtaking views. The parking garage in Image #1 is in my home town of ST. Louis, Mo and luckily I met someone that took me to this location because it's a very hidden gem. Just a single entrance into a massive concrete structure and then when you enter its just your normal garage. However, if you just keep going up to the top floor you get to this area surrounded by windows with a massive vaulted window ceiling.

The unique beauty I'm talking about can also be in the simplest of areas. One day I was shooting a 65 Fastback Mustang and while we were driving to our last location the car happened to die on us. We couldn't figure out why and still to this day we don't understand what happened. She just wouldn't start and obviously this wasn't planned. I'm getting worried we are going to have to call the shoot and I didn't get all the shots needed. However, while we were sitting there trying to kill sometime and attempt to start her up again I started to notice something. The car was sitting in the perfect setting. I took out my camera and proceeded to take some shots.

Broken Down

If I didn't take the time to actually see the beauty in my surroundings I would have never captured this shot. One of my most liked and shared images on socials to date.

One lesson I have learned as a photographer is that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. Weather it's where your clients car decides it wants to take a little breather or a rundown garage there is always a unique story to be told and beauty to be captured.

As artists, we just need to be willing to see it.
